Road America: Day Two

Updated: Dec 11, 2021

Hey all! Welcome back to my blog!

I’m gearing up to yell ya’ll about my adventures on day two here at Road America!

So lets go!

DAY TWO

The morning started off pretty great, got woken up by the sound of race cars and then I sat and watched Pro Mazda practice in my pajamas from the camper window.

It was pretty cool.

IndyCar’s finally hit the track for practice one at 11 so we headed down to the pit area and Paddock

before that and wandered around.

All the teams and drivers were getting ready for practice.

We stood by Penske’s tent for a long time watching Helio and Simon Pageanud get interviewed in hopes they would come our way when they were done.

Then Rick Mears appeared in his flip flops for an interview.

The guy interviewing him was shaking.

Finally I got tired of waiting for the drivers to come our way so I made my way down pit lane and watched all the cars get lined up. It was pretty cool to see them up close and personal.

And we saw the drivers heading to their pit stall.

I decided to hang out by Josef Newgrden’s pit stall and watched him get into the car which was pretty cool.

I watched the drivers come out from the pit exit for a while and then I headed to watch from turn one. They sure do speed past there.

Then we took the bikes and headed towards Canada’s corner stopping on the way to watch the practice from different parts of the track.

One of the many reasons I’ve fallen in love with Road America so quickly.

We watched practice at many different areas of the tracks.

Some of the turns they just whip around so fast.

As the end of practice neared we decided to head back towards the pit area to catch some drivers as they exited their cars.

My brother was waiting to get a picture with Helio when he ran off saying he’d be back but we had to go weigh in before he was late.

So we took the hint and followed him and that’s when we hit the jackpot.

Out came Simon Pagenud so I asked for a selfie.

He was sweaty as I put my arm around him.

Then came over Will Power.

It was pretty cool to meet those two.

Both members of team Penske.

Will is legend, a series championship winner, and one of the winingest drivers in the series history.

And Pagenud is dominating this season; leading in championship points with three wins and 5 poles

this season.

I was low-key geeking out.

Then I ventured by myself to the Q&A session at the Chevy tent with Newgarden and Spencer Pigot.

It was hilarious I tell you. So great.

Then I went to the Paddock shop where Josef Newgarden was signing copies of his children book he collaborated on that came out today.

We had an actual real life conversation after he signed my book which was pretty cool.

I told him I was excited for the book because I am going to school to become a kindergarten teacher.

Then he said, “cool!”

And I said yeah I’m excited to have this book in my classroom someday. Then we talked about how kids will love it. And we talked about how they will love it because it’s IndyCar and who doesn’t love IndyCar and we laughed.

And then I said how I’m going to create a whole generation of racers with this book in my classroom.

It was cool that my brain actually decided to work this time.

Then I went and chilled back at the campsite until it was time for practice 2. We watched as they

exited pit lane for a while before watching the rest of practice at turn 5.

It was a pretty good practice. It was great to see Newgarden doing well out there.

And super glad that he has been cleared to race the rest of the weekend.

And he got a pretty great response from Mario Andretti for going out there and racing this weekend which is pretty cool to have Mario Andretti say something grea about your favorite driver.

So after practice we waited outside tech for divers to come around but they never did. But I did almost get run over by Michael Andretti on a scooter.

Who we did see around all the time though was Montoya; much to my distaste.

He was always zipping around on a scooter. No one was ever going up and trying to get his autograph though.

Hmm I wonder why.

We’re just going leave it at that.

I’ll see ya’ll tomorrow.
