Well everyone, it finally happened.
Will Power finally won the Indy 500.
I can’t hardly believe it. It’s been five years since I’ve been this ecstatic about an Indy 500 win with Tony Kannan in 2013.
But when Jack Harvey and Stefan Wilson peeled off onto pit lane on lap 197 I went crazy. In that moment I knew that Will Power was about to win the Indy 500. Those last three laps felt like they went on forever. I was practically holding my breath praying that nothing bad would happen: that Power wouldn’t crash or that a caution would come out. But neither of those things happened. Will Power crossed the yard of bricks first with the checkered flag waving.
I was jumping up and down and yelling and screaming I couldn’t believe he was finally able to do it. Just the night before I was talking with a friend and we were both saying how much we would love to see Will Power win an Indy 500, because he’s Will Power. And then the man went out and did it, didn’t he? Will Power won the 102nd running of the Indy 500. In all of the victory lane celebration pictures you can clearly see the pure emotion on Power’s face. Just by looking at those pictures you can tell how much this win means to him.
On his radio after he won he exclaimed loudly, “give me respect mother f*****.” And don’t get me wrong, that sounds like something Will Power would say, but I didn’t exactly get what he was getting at by saying that. But then I watched a post race interview with Marshall Pruett and Robin Miller and Power talked about how he never knew if he would get the win at Indy and even though he’s gotten so many poles and so many wins he had never gotten the big one, the one everyone always talks about. So even though he is this accomplished driver he said he didn’t think he’d get the respect and recognition that he deserves without wining Indy, and he was finally able to do that. So “give me respect mother f*****” has a lot more meaning behind it than you think. And you know what, we will all be giving you the respect that you deserve Will Power, Indy 500 champion.
Will Power deserved that win thats for sure. The man is a legend and in my mind he had already become one of the best drivers of his generation. So to me it always baffled me that Will Power, with 34 wins and 51 poles, an IndyCar champion, a driver for Team Penske had never won an Indy 500. So today, Will Power officially cemented his place in history and has officially become one of the greatest drivers of his time to not only me, but to everyone. He now stands along the likes of Helio Castoneves and Scott Dixon. Will Freaking Power people. Will Freaking Power. xxkaitlyn
